grandparent's day
What a special Friday we had in Rahealty National School as we welcomed over 100 of our grandparents and relatives to our school to celebrate the huge influence they have and have had in our lives. We celebrated those present, those living away and those who are not with us anymore. Each class performed for the audience and our grandparents then had a chance to explore the school and their grandchildren’s classrooms. We thank everyone who contributed to such a special day, but in particular, we thank our Parent’s Council. The atmosphere created in the school with an amazing spread of refreshments, decorations and warm welcomes made the day extra special for all. Below is a snapshot of our special guests. We wish everyone continued health and happiness for the year ahead.

Information from Tulsa regarding Childcare
Please be advised that on the 18th February 2019, the Child Care Act 1991 (Early Years Services) (Registration of School Age Services) Regulations 2018 came into effect.
Services that provide after school childcare must now register with Tusla. What’s for breakfast?
Today, we surveyed breakfast choices in our school. This was an open ended survey to include the most accurate responses. Overall, the results are very encouraging throughout the school. We will use the results to investigate the sugar content of our most popular choices. Our main piece of advice from today would be to stress the importance of eating a breakfast every morning. After a long night’s sleep, our bodies are in need of food to fuel us for the day, which allows to perform at our best in all areas.

Our New Junior Infants

Water Safety
At this time of year, with the arrival of warmer weather it is a most opportune time to highlight the dangers of playing in water and the risks that various activities pose.
It is imperative that your child understands the risks involved when playing near water. As our partners in education and with the safety of your child paramount, we ask you to take a look at the water safety messages on www.iws.ie and to have a discussion with your child about the topics presented.

Rahealty N.S School Tour 2018
We throughly enjoyed our School Tour this year which was full of adventure and fun. Our first stop was Cobh. Titanic Experience Cobh is a visitor centre located in the original White Star Line Ticket Office in the centre of Cobh town (formally known as Queenstown), in what was the departure point for the final 123 passengers who boarded the Titanic. After we discovered the fate of the 123 Queenstown passengers we headed for the outdoors, to Fota Wildlife Park.
Here each group was given a guided tour of the park and taken through basic terms such as Feeding Behaviours, Habitats and Threats. We ended the tour by spending time in the Woodland areas playing games and examining insects through the use of pooters.
Of course no School Tour is complete without a trip to Mc Donalds!
Many thanks to the Parent's Council for subsidising the cost of the tour. It was greatly enjoyed by all!

Many thanks to our fantastic parents for baking and sending in lots of cakes and treats. We were overwhelmed by the huge support. They raised €310 which will be put towards reducing the cost of the school tour. Go raibh míle maith agaibh.
RSA Talk
On Monday we had Catherine in to talk to each class in the school on behalf of the Road Safety Authority. This was a Green School initiative which was set out by the committee at the start of the year as we have been working towards our Travel Green Flag for the past two years.
Catherine tackled all elements of road safety while tailoring her presentation to each age group. She discussed how to be safe when walking, cycling, travelling by public transport, being a passenger, urban rural transport issues and the practicing of safe road behaviour in general.
We were very fortunate to get Catherine as a speaker and will put all we learned into practice on our roads.

Friendship Week
This week we held Friendship Week in our school. It was a marvellous success. Well done to all children who participated in the numerous activities integrated into the curriculum throughout the week. Today during our assembly each class displayed their special talents to the school in the form of artwork, poetry and songs.
The Junior and Senior Infants recited a poem "Let's Keep Our Friend From Feeling Sad". They spoke about all the fun activities they did in class during the week including a friendship quiz. They then finished with the song "You've Got a Friend in Me". Have a look at their beautiful Friendship Flower below.
First and Second class entertained the audience with the poem "I Can be a Pal" . They all had a secret friend for the week who they were extra kind to. These secret friends were only revealed at the end of the week
I Can be a Pal
By: Kristen Smith
I can be a pal by smiling at you.
I can be a pal when you feel blue.
I can be a pal who is honest and kind.
I can be a pal when you're in a bind.
I can be a pal by saying please and thank you.
I can be a pal when no one wants to.
I can be a pal every single day.
I can be your pal, what do you say?
Third and Fourth Class wrote poems and made friendship posters with slogans on them. They created a friendship tree and chain. At the assembly they sang "You Can Count On Me" by Bruno Mars.
Fifth and Sixth class had a beautiful friendship collage on display at the assembly. They highlighted the fact that the poster wasn't perfect and that sometimes friendships aren't perfect and need to be worked on. Reviewing different ways to resolve these little fights or conflicts we have with friends can help us learn important life skills. Visit the Fifth and Sixth class page to find out more of the enjoyable activities they took part in.
We plan on using everything we learned during Friendship Week all year round!
Soccer Yard League
Following the success of our hurling yard league before Christmas, our soccer yard league for 3rd-6th class is now up and running. It is great to see all children taking part to improve their skills.
Past pupils shining bright!
Well done to past pupils Tony Galvin, Liam McCormack, Jack Kelly and Henry Fogarty on their recent successes with Peake Villa. Liam and Tony helped the U15 team to progress to the quarter final of the SFAI U15 Skechers National Cup. All four boys are members of the U17 squad who are through to the quarter finals of the FAI U17 Challenge Cup. We wish the boys every success in the rest of the competition.
Happy Pancake Tuesday!
Many thanks to the Parents' Association for the delicious pancakes.
Literacy is the key to success in life and we are passionate about giving children a flying start to becoming independent, confident, life-long readers. Below are some suggestions on how you can help your child become a happy and confident reader.
"There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world.
Love of books is the best of all."
- Be a role model and let your child see you reading – a newspaper, a book, a magazine.
- Talk to your child about the joy of reading.
- Read together every day. Make it an enjoyable activity.
- Read to your child with humour and expression. Use different voices.
- Be interactive. Discuss what is happening in the book, ask questions about the story, point out objects and words on the page.
- Know when to stop. Put the book away when your child loses interest. Choose a different book or come back to it later.
- Read it again and again. Young children especially love repetition so go ahead and read your child’s favourite book for the 100th time!!
- Join the local library and visit it regularly.
- Give everything a name. Build your child’s vocabulary by talking about interesting words and objects and discussing words in the reading and in the environment around you.
- Point out print everywhere. Talk about written words you see in the world around you. Find new words on each outing.
- In the evening time, turn off the TV and all interactive devices and let your child ‘get lost’ in a book
"There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world.
Love of books is the best of all."
